I've got a Peavey 100w head and DigiTech RP250 and having tone problems. Any good settings suggestions?

I play in a rock cover band so I need a diverse ortment of sounds from regular old rock and roll to very heavy. Played thrash metal for many years so I kinda got that part down, it's the ability to imilate diversity and dynamics that I'm lacking. HELP!
