Low lying toothache!!!?

Well I have a broken tooth sine the filling came out a few months ago when eating gum but I did not hurt at all. But now it's starting to irate me as if I eat an apple the food gets trapped in the back of the tooth causing more pain but if I eat meat it doesn't hurt which is weird. I am supposed to have an appointment this October but it's been put back till January 29th 2009!!! How muc more damage will happen to the tooth if it's left that long? I do brush & floss & mouthwash. But I do still have a "sweet tooth"
