I've had my braces on for 8 years now. NO LIE! Does is cause damage?

Does having braces on for a polonged period of time cause damage to your teeth. I take excellent care of me teeth but for some reason my teeth seem to be getting weaker. I've been getting cavities and toothaches out of no where.
